ZARATE IS BACK!!!!
Lazio joined Inter Milan at the top of the Serie A standings after Mauro Zarate's solitary goal saw them beat Chievo in Verona this afternoon.Zarate struck in the 69th minute to hand the visitors their third win in four games. The outcome sees the Romans go level on 10 points with Inter, who lost 1-0 at Roma on Saturday.
Lazio coach Eddy Reja made three changes to the team that held AC Milan to a 1-1 draw in midweek, with Stephan Lichtsteiner, Francesco Matuzalem and Zarate earning a place in the starting XI.Lazio dominated possession and almost went in front with 13 minutes played.Stefano Mauri served Zarate inside the area and his left-footed strike was met by a fine save from Chievo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino.
Shortly after, Mauri latched onto Lichtsteiner's cross and his powerful header from the heart of the area went wide.Zarate should have put the visitors in front in the 36th minute but the Argentinian struck over the crossbar from the six-yard box.Chievo had the first chance on goal on the stroke of half-time.
Sergio Pellissier's diagonal effort from the edge of the area was parried away by Lazio goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.Lazio continued to press forward after the re-start and almost broke the deadlock in the 56th minute.Hernanes served an unmarked Lichtsteiner and his right-footed shot from 15 yards went just high.
Lazio's efforts were rewarded soon after though.
A quick counter-attack saw Mauri pick out Zarate and the striker fired from a difficult angle past Sorrentino and into the back of the net.Chievo had their best chance to equalise with seven minutes remaining.Kevin Constant's bullet strike from outside the area went just wide of the far post with Muslera already beaten.
